Facing Redundancy?
Facing redundancy and looking for a new job can be a worrying time. The journey ahead may not be an easy one, but it may be one which takes you to new places that you never envisaged. You should take advantage of all the job hunting resources freely available out there, much of this can easily be found on the internet, with a quick google around. I will try to give you a brief introduction to the process.
Writing a CV is the first stage in the process and help is at hand for this too.
There are CV writing services which for a fee will produce a professional CV for you, although I’m a great advocate of DIY, and I would suggest at least in the first instance that you open your tool box and have a go yourself. At the very least it may allow you to gather all the evidence you need to make the most of a consultation with a professional CV coach. At best, armed with plenty of research from the web, and perhaps the assistance of a good recruitment agency you will end up with a great CV, which successfully sells your skills to any prospective employer, and all at my favourite price – free of charge!
Make sure your CV is absolutely first class, and make sure that you tailor your CV for each individual application. Remember that a first sift of CVs is often done by someone who is not technically competent in your discipline, but perhaps someone who is looking for matching skills highlighted on the job description. So the closer your CV resembles the person specification the more likely you will be to reach interview stage.
Once at interview stage, again there is a mass of information freely available on the internet, and if you are using an agency, a good agent will coach you prior to interview, give you inside information about typical questions and ensure you have the best chance of success.
I recently spoke to someone who had spent his whole career working for one of the major petrochemical companies on Teesside. He was unfortunately made redundant, and following a period of initial concern of what the future might hold, he started a whole new career with the Health and Safety Executive.
He is now filled with energy and passion for his new job, and feels that this is a positive new step in his career offering new opportunities, and a step that he would not have taken had he not been made redundant.
Try to remain positive, remember that finding a new job is a job in itself. A job which is best tackled by putting in similar hours and effort to those you would in a job. Make sure your CV is absolutely first class, and make sure that you tailor your CV for each individual application.
